JPG, PNG, WebPAbout the Image Posterize effect
The Image Posterize tool runs entirely in your browser. Drop or select an image, set Levels between 2 and 16, and click Apply. For each pixel, every RGB channel value is remapped to one of levels discrete steps using the formula Math.round(value / 255 * (levels − 1)) / (levels − 1) * 255. Lower values produce a flat, poster-like look with bold blocks of color; higher values approach the original image. Nothing is uploaded; all processing happens locally.
How to use it
- Click the drop zone or drop an image file onto it.
- Drag the Levels slider — lower values mean fewer colors and a more dramatic effect.
- Click Apply to render the effect onto the image.
- Click Download to save the result, Reset to restore the original, or Clear to start over.
Frequently asked questions
What does the levels value mean? It is the number of distinct values per RGB channel. With 2 levels you get 2³ = 8 total colors; with 4 levels you get 4³ = 64 total colors.
What is the output format? The download is a PNG file. This preserves detail and avoids compression artifacts.
Does this tool upload my images? No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
Can I apply the effect multiple times? Yes. Each Apply works on the current canvas, so successive clicks compound the effect. Use Reset to return to the original.
